SUMMER NEWSLETTER PAGE TWO
2003
Problems out there: SPIDER MITES on Dwarf Alberta Spruce - look for bronzing. This is serious. Spray
with ISOTOX or you'll lose your tree! SHOOT TIP MOTH & BORERS on Pines & Spruces - tips curl
and turn brown. Prune out dead shoot and redirect a side shoot to become the leader. TAR SPOT on
Maple leaves - just cosmetic, won't hurt the tree. Nothing to do about it. DROUGHT INJURY on
everything - brown curled leaves, sunburn. WATER! SPRUCE GALLS - pineapple-like swellings at tip of
branches, pick off and burn.
JAPANESE BEETLES ARE EMERGING! Be on guard. Watch your roses, hibiscus, purple leaf plums. If
you want to spray, SEVIN works well and its low toxicity makes it relatively safe to use around pets and
children. We have Beetle traps, pheromone bait and refill bags. You can apply BAYER ALL SEASON
GRUB CONTROL now and anytime is a good time to apply MILKY SPORE.
Want to try a borderline hardy plant for Zone 6? Are you close to Lake Michigan? Do you have a protected
spot? Try Sarcococca, a beautiful low groundcover or Aucuba, yellow leaves with green spots for shade,
or Agapanthus or Abelia 'Edward Goucher'.
